Q: Is NiCopp® approved by the DOT for brake line applications?
A: Absolutely. NiCopp® is a nickel-copper brake tubing that meets SAE standard J1047 and ISO 4038, meeting all international and U.S. requirements for brake tubing. At first glance, some inspectors may mistake NiCopp for plain copper tubing; informing them that the tubing is a nickel -copper alloy will usually suffice. While NiCopp® and other nickel-copper alloys are becoming more prevalent, some inspectors may still need to be made aware of the specifications and AGS can provide those when necessary. Current literature and classroom materials on the subject of automotive brake systems identify nickel-copper alloy tubing as being a premium upgrade to steel.
Q: What are the 3 brake tubing types and what are the differences?
A: The 3 different types can be used interchangeably and all conform to the required SAE specifications for automotive brake lines.
STANDARD STEEL® – An all purpose line, standard steel is the economical choice for all types of repairs. It is easy to bend and form, while also having a zinc-coating that resists corrosion.
POLY-ARMOUR® – An excellent choice for any repair/replacement, but especially where vehicles are exposed to harsh road conditions, such as: ice, snow, salt, and other road preparations. The plastic (PVF) coating provides an extra barrier against corrosion and road debris. This line is being used OE on most vehicles today.
NICOPP® – Unlike both STANDARD STEEL® and POLY-ARMOUR®, this is not a steel product. NICOPP® is an alloy of Nickel, Copper, and Iron; making it inherently rust-proof. This line is the most expensive of the 3 and provides the absolute best bending performance and is the longest lasting brake line available. This type of tubing was developed by Volvo and can be found OE on other European imports as well. Excellent for vehicles operated in extreme or harsh environments, for fleet vehicles, and for restoration vehicles.
Q: Will any of the Sil-Glyde® products degrade materials like neoprene, rubber, and/or cork?
A: The Sil-Glyde® and any of AGS’s other silica-based products will not attack any of the materials you have listed above. The base material, silica, is an inert material.
Q: What temperature range can Thread-Magic® Spark Plug Anti-Seize work in and up to?
A: Thread-Magic® Spark Plug Anti-Seize works in all temperatures up to 400°F.
Q: How does the Store It...Start It® product compare to Sta-Bil® by Gold Eagle®, especially when using with ethanol?
A: Based on their available MSDS information, the main ingredient in the product from Gold Eagle® called Sta-bil® is Naptha (90% to 100%), and is actually the same petroleum distillate used in charcoal lighter fluid and stove fuel. It is completely insoluble with water and as ethanol contains a substantial amount of water in its composition, I would say that it’s probably not the best product to use in a situation where ethanol is introduced into the system. Their reasoning, I believe, for using this product is because it leaves an oily film behind after evaporation, which in turn, does protect cylinder walls, rings, valve guides, and carburetor internals to help on a restart after long periods of rest. It does NOT, however, help to maintain octane levels, nor does it do anything to remove existing water.
Store It Start It® on the other hand, contains one particular ingredient in the mixture, designed not only to help stave off the degradation effects of gasoline in stasis, but it also helps to maintain octane levels. This chemical is the ingredient toluene, which is a legitimate octane booster. Store It Start It® also contains several other ingredients that allow the oily film residue to remain behind on metal parts after evaporation, affording the same lubrication protection that the Sta-bil® product offers, and also has cleaning properties for carburetors and fuel injection systems. All of the additive chemical ingredients are either miscible or soluble with ethyl alcohol, helping the alcohol to pass through the system much more efficiently, therefore allowing cleaner and smoother combustion. To be used as an additive for driving, this product is far superior to the competitors'.
Being used as a storage chemical, the AGS product wins hands down due to the octane maintenance capabilities, the effectiveness to carry alcohol and water through the system, and also contains the same lubricating properties once the other chemicals have evaporated off, protecting internal engine parts and making restart after storage easier and smoother.
Q: How and on what brake components is Sil-Glyde® Brake Lubricant meant to be used?
A: This lubricant is used anywhere within the entire braking system to help eliminate squeaking caused by metal to metal contact, and also to keep rubber parts soft and pliant. Caliper bolts, slides, boots, and pistons all benefit from this product. This product is used on drum brakes on the pads, where the shoes contact the backing plate, where the springs contact the shoes and pivot point, on the self adjusting cam, and anywhere else that there is potential metal to metal contact.
